Awesome Mix Vol. 2 (Guess)

Personal project. Inspired by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

[May contain Guardians of the Galaxy Spoilers.] Guardians of the Galaxy had a very fun and iconic sound. That sound largely came from a mix tape that the main character, Peter Quill (Starlord), received from his mother when he was a child. At the end of the movie, we find out he has a second tape. The obvious implication is the sequel will have the same iconic soundtrack of (mostly) 70s pop songs. I like to think of my self as pretty good with music, so I decided to guess what songs might appear in the next movie and on Awesome Mix Vol. 2. Here it is.

The Details

To come up with this, I looked at how the first movie used the music and then looked into any clues I could find about the plot of the sequel. After that, I went through all the billboard 100 hits from 1967 through 1982 that had a similar sound. I also looked into what I would call pop-adjacent songs, which would include familiar songs that were not on top 100 billboard charts and songs by artists that frequented the charts. I ended up having 10/12 of the songs from top 100 charts and 2 songs by top 100 artists. The 13th song is more of a bonus track that I’d really love to see in the movie; I really don’t think it’s likely to show up, but it did reach the #2 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.

1. The Air That I Breathe The Hollies 1974
2. More, More, More Andrea True Connection 1976
3. Vehicle The Ides Of March 1970
4. Blinded By The Light Manfred Mann’s Earth Band 1977
5. Tighter, Tighter Alive and Kicking 1970
6. Mama Told Me (Not To Come) Three Dog Night 1970
7. Just The Two Of Us Grover Washington Jr. & Bill Withers 1981
8. Paranoid Black Sabbath 1970
9. Bad Moon Rising Creedence Clearwater Revival 1969
10. (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher Rita Coolidge 1977
11. A Life Of Illusion Joe Walsh 1981
12. Nothing From Nothing Billy Preston 1974
13. Also Sprach Zarathustra (Disco Version) Deodato 1973

Anyway, if you liked the songs from Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll probably feel the same way about these. When the movie actually comes out, I’ll compare it’s Awesome Mix Vol. 2 with my own.
